Volunteer Opportunities

We at HFC believe that all funds obtained from donations and grants should go directly to our programs.  To this end, all senior management staff and directors volunteer their time.  We are looking for others to dedicate a few hours of their time to help provide a healthier future for the children and women of East Africa.  Please find open volunteer positions below.  If you have a specific talent or want to help in a specific way not listed, please do not hesitate to contact us.

UNITED STATES:

  • Volunteer Coordinator - Position involves communicating with potential volunteers via email to assess interest and forwarding volunteer applications to senior management.  Possibility to grow into more in depth work with the volunteers as experience increases including arranging trips, arranging medical licenses, etc.  Time commitment: a couple of hours a week.
  • Website Administrator - Seeking a volunteer experienced in Drupal website design to keep website updated and current.  Experience with flash and video components desirable.  Time commitment: variable as needed
  • Grant Researcher - volunteer to search the web and other sources for viable grants fitting into the HFC vision and operations. Time commitment: as available
  • Grant Writer - seeking an experienced grant writer in the NGO sector to submit LOI and invited grants to specific funding agencies.  Time commitment: as available
  • Scholarship Manager - seeking a dedicated volunteer to administer our scholarship program.  Must be organized and willing to create funding criteria and follow students' progress semi-annually and contact past scholarship donors to request next term funds. Time commitment: a few hours 3-4 times a year
  • Newsletter Manager - Seeking a creative person with good writing skills to put together quarterly newsletters via email program.  Time commitment: a few hours quarterly
  • Publicist/Marketer - Need experienced publicist or marketer to market HFC programs to print and TV media.  This includes press releases around fundraising events or major grant approvals.  Time commitment - as available and prior to semi-annual fundraisers
  • Rotarians/Lions/Soroptomists/etc. - interested in presenting HFC work to your local club.  Many of our projects have been funded by local and international service organization grants and any help in obtaining local support in your community is appreciated.  Time commitment - one meeting expandable into grant writing or support fundraising as develops.
  • Presentation Organizer - seeking motivated, personable volunteer to approach local religious groups, services groups, etc. and arrange for HFC presentations for support.  Mainly located in Los Angeles, Missouri, NYC, and Seattle.  Time commitment - variable
  • Medical Supply Coordinator - will oversee obtaining and organizing donated medical shipments from partner organizations to Rwanda.  Involves working with local service or religious organizations to obtain funding for shipping.  Time commitment - a couple of hours a month as needed
  • Los Angeles Fundraiser Volunteers - need several volunteers to help organize Los Angeles fundraiser scheduled for the first half of February 2010.  Involves sending out invites, monitoring acceptances, contacting media, obtaining sponsors and auction items, etc. Also need volunteers to work the event setting up, greeting, working tables, etc.  Time commitment - variable through Feb. 2010, weekly meetings the month before the event.
  • Administrative Assistant - variable duties as needed involving sending out receipts after a fundraiser, updating contact lists, other odds and ends.  Time commitment - as available

 INTERNATIONAL:

  • Medical Officer (Rwanda) - experienced pediatrician or family practice physician interested in overseeing the operations of our two clinics outside of Kibungo, Rwanda.  Involves working with the National Ministry of Health, the local District government, the Anglican Church of Rwanda, local Peace Corps volunteers, local providers, etc. to ensure excellent quality and distribution of care.  Applicant must be adventurous, motivated, self-directing and able to problem solve.  Experience in international health a must.  Position does come with paid housing and small stipend to support him/her on the ground.  Time commitment - 6 month minimum beginning in spring of 2010.
  • Medical Providers (Rwanda) - pediatricians, family practice, OB/GYN, pediatric subspecialists, nurses, social workers, and third year or higher pediatric residents interested in providing medical care at the HFC Children's and Women's Health Center in Karama, Rwanda, outside of Kibungo.  The clinic specializes in children and women's health, but does see some men for 1/2 day per week and is supported by local providers and nurses. Time commitment - one month minimum. 
  • MPH Graduates/Students (Kenya/Rwanda)- interested in health advocacy, needs assessments, etc. Time commitment - one month minimum. 
  • Non-medical Personnel (Rwanda) - clinic building, upkeep, community outreach, general support, etc.  Time commitment - two weeks minimum. 
  • Photographer (Rwanda/Kenya) - need a motivated, personable, professional or semi-professional photographer to document children living in the area and interview photographic subjects regarding their family and life in Rwanda.  Work will be used in a book documenting HFC work and the obstacles to children/women's health in East Africa.  All phtographic credit will be given to the photographer in conjunction with HFC.  Time commitment - one month minimum
  • Videographer (Rwanda) - need a experienced or aspiring documentary film maker to capture the health conditions, obstacles, care of children and women in Kibungo Rwanda before and after HFC clinic is in operation.  Would also like to include footage of the clinic building process/progress.  This video will be used for marketing and fundraising purposes.  The film maker will also have the right to use the finished footage for his/her own professional development upon approval of HFC.  A small stipend may be available for this project to the successful applicant.  Time commitment - minimum of 1 month in fall 2009 and 1 month in summer/fall of 2010.  Two or three film makers could collaborate on project.
  • HFC Local Representative (Kenya) - looking for someone currently living in Kisumu, Kenya, or who will be living there by January 2010, to serve as our local contact.  Involves visiting our clinic site in the area each month and being able to communicate with our personnel at the site as needed.  Must be a professional in Kisumu.  Female gender preferred.

Travel and per diem are the responsibility fo the volunteer

HFC does not require an administrative fee to volunteer
